The Friends of Corvallis Parks and Recreation are now raising money to build a memorial for Rene Moye, the Director of Corvallis Parks and Recreation from 1974 to 2000. The City Council has renamed the softball fields and outdoor basketball court on the west side of Sunset Park the Rene Moye Sports Complex. The FRIENDS are working to raise about $10,000 (no taxes are to be used) to build a beautiful and creative entrance to the Sports Complex that will provide a lasting tribute to a creative and dedicated leader in our community.

Under Rene’s leadership and work with elected officials, a skilled staff, community leaders and stakeholders, Corvallis became a premier City Parks and Recreation program in the State. During his time a number of parks were developed in Corvallis including Riverfront Commemorative Park, Sunset Park, Starker Arts Park, Timberhill Park, Washington Park, Peanut Park, Tunison Park, Riverbend Park and the planning of the Crystal Lake Sports Fields Complex. With his guidance and dedication such Open Spaces and Natural Areas as Bald Hill, Alan Berg Natural Area, Brandis Natural Area, Chip Ross Natural Area, and many more were developed. Also during his tenure such facilities as Osborn Aquatic Center, Chintimini Senior/ Community Center, the Parks and Recreation Office building and the Majestic Theatre were developed into community activity spaces and programs.

Rene’s vision of development and utilization of spaces for public use was a valuable part of why Corvallis is such a beautiful place to live. He had a creative mind and a personality that encouraged others to help develop and build such wonderful places in Corvallis that we all enjoy today.
